Gifu Lanterns: Timeless Craftsmanship in Mino Washi and Bamboo

Gifu Lanterns are a traditional craft from Gifu City in Gifu Prefecture, with a history spanning over 300 years. Designated as a National Traditional Craft in 1995, these lanterns are characterized by delicate craftsmanship that utilizes Mino Washi paper, which boasts a 1,300-year history, and bamboo. The allure of Mino Washi lies in its remarkable combination of thinness, durability, and beauty, brought to life by the expert papermaking techniques of skilled artisans. The globally renowned Akari Lamp series by Isamu Noguchi is also produced in Gifu using the techniques of Gifu Lanterns. Revered both in Japan and abroad, Gifu Lanterns are celebrated as exceptional pieces of interior lighting, blending traditional elegance with modern design.
