A quarry in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, where the rare Awaji stone is extracted.

Aji Stone: 1,000 Years of Craftsmanship and Prestige

Aji Stone, quarried exclusively in the Aji region of Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, is celebrated as the "Diamond of Granite" and regarded as one of the finest stones in the world. Its exceptionally fine and dense crystalline structure not only provides remarkable hardness and durability but also makes it highly workable for carving and intricate detailing. The stone’s distinctive bluish hue and unique "flecked" patterns become increasingly lustrous with polishing, exuding an unparalleled sense of elegance and prestige. With a history spanning nearly 1,000 years since the late Heian period, Aji Stone has been widely used for tombstones, lanterns, sculptures, and more. This legacy continues today, upheld by the expertise of skilled stone artisans who honor its tradition.

Aoishima: Mastering the Timeless Art of Aji Stone Craftsmanship

Nestled in the tranquil natural surroundings of Kagawa Prefecture, Aoishima was founded by master artisan Ninomiya, a craftsman specializing in the renowned Aji Stone, often called the "Diamond of Granite." This rare stone, quarried exclusively in the towns of Mure and Aji, is celebrated for its bluish tint and distinctive speckles of black mica. With a legacy spanning over 400 years since the late Heian period, Aji Stone’s unmatched durability and beauty have been highly prized, gracing historical structures such as Takamatsu Castle and Yashima Toshogu Shrine. The exceptional craftsmanship of artisans who carry on this tradition imbues each piece with enduring value and timeless elegance.
