Instruction for Use

About Brass

This product is made of solid brass without any plating or painting. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc (for example, like the 5-yen coin) that enjoys a beautiful patina over time. With use, it gains character and its surface forms an oxide layer that protects the metal. The surface of the brass is given a hairline finish (fine lines) to add texture, and these are not considered defects.

About Aging

The brass may discolor where it comes into contact with water or hands, and it will darken overall with time. The aging process does not occur uniformly across the brass surface, so initial unevenness in color may be observed. However, this process is part of the charm, and we hope you enjoy the journey to a uniform patina.

Care Instructions

  • If the brass gets wet, wipe it with a dry cloth to remove moisture.
  • In rare cases, verdigris (a greenish patina) may form during use. This is a type of rust that occurs when copper oxidizes. Verdigris is harmless and non-toxic, but if it concerns you, you can remove it by rubbing with a cloth dipped in a mixture of equal parts vinegar and salt. Rinse afterward and dry well.
  • Detergents and chemicals can affect metal, so please check the product instructions before use.

Banko-yaki: 300 Years of Tradition in Japanese Pottery and Tea Culture

Banko-yaki is a type of pottery that originated during the Edo period and boasts a history of over 300 years. Its name reflects a wish for “eternal prosperity and excellence.” Although it experienced a period of decline, the craft was revitalized by kilns in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, where it flourished alongside the rise of sencha tea culture. Banko-yaki teapots are renowned for their distinctive combination of durability and lightness, and, together with Tokoname-yaki, they continue to play a vital role in supporting Japan's tea culture.
