Japanese "Kumiko Zaiku" : 1400 Years of Timeless Japanese Woodcraft

Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique that creates intricate geometric patterns by interlocking pieces of wood without the use of nails. Originating over 1,400 years ago alongside the introduction of Buddhism, this technique has evolved uniquely through the refined sensibilities of the Japanese people. The process involves meticulously crafting small wooden components called "leaves" and assembling them by hand within a lattice framework, resulting in a distinctive beauty. This craftsmanship is applied to architecture, furniture, and lighting fixtures, symbolizing the fusion of traditional artistry and modern design in Japanese craftsmanship.

Ominato Bunkichi: 150 Years of Timeless Kumiko Craftsmanship

Established in 1870 in Kamo City, Niigata Prefecture, Ominato Bunkichi is a long-established small business that began with the sale of traditional Japanese paper. Over time, it expanded to include craftsmen specializing in tansu (traditional chests), fittings, and sliding doors. Since the 1980s, the company has ventured into interior products, including furniture. Its "Kumiko Lantern," a lighting fixture utilizing the traditional Japanese woodworking technique of kumiko, has been selected for the "Century Story" project, which highlights exceptional historic brands from Niigata. The company sources Akita cedar from a small, family-run sawmill and repurposes leftover wood. By crafting kumiko products through precise woodworking to 0.1mm accuracy, their artisans continue to preserve this traditional craft for future generations.
