Bespoke Suruga Bamboo Masterpieces for Global Luxury Spaces
We translate the organic warmth and nearly 800-year history of traditional Japanese bamboo plaiting into striking contemporary hospitality features. Partnering with elite heritage workshops and a dedicated collective of master artisans, Millennium Gallery Japan curates, refines, and delivers contract-quality bamboo installations and lighting for the world’s most prestigious brands.

The Origin: A Masterful Dialogue with Nature Since the 13th Century
Our partnering artisans belong to a distinguished cooperative based in Shizuoka City, preserving the legendary "Suruga Bamboo Fine Stripe Work" (Suruga Take Sensuji Zaiku). The roots of this craft trace back nearly 800 years to the Kamakura period, crossing the seas from Fujian Province. By the mid-Edo period, these workshops established a revolutionary technique of assembling thousands of hair-thin, rounded bamboo strips. Designated as an official National Traditional Craft in 1976, our partnering studios continue to evolve this cultural lineage, transforming ancient vessel-making into breathtaking modern lighting and avant-garde interior art for global architects.

The Material: Seasoned "Nigatake" and "Moso" Bamboo
The foundation of this light, refined craft begins with the meticulous selection of local "Nigatake" and "Moso" bamboo, prized for their straight internodes. Our partnering workshops handle the entire preparation process, from selective cultivation and harvesting to extended slow-drying. Unlike common flat bamboo strips, Suruga craftsmanship exclusively uses ultra-fine round bamboo strips. This meticulous seasoning ensures that the bamboo achieves the dimensional stability required to endure the air conditioning and shifting microclimates of international luxury resorts while maintaining a fully sustainable material lifecycle.

The Precision: Clean Curves and Elegant Fluidity
True mastery of Suruga bamboo work requires 5 to 10 years of rigorous training. Artisans split raw bamboo into fine filaments and shape them through a microscopic shaving process known as "Komawari." The iconic, elegant curves are formed individually by hand using heated irons to bend the round strips before they are meticulously assembled into a "thousand-stripe" framework, finished with protective coatings. In Japanese culture, the distinctive nodes of the bamboo symbolize life’s milestones and resilience, adding a deep emotional resonance to luxury hospitality installations.
