Product Information

This teapot, designed with the iron bowls carried by mendicant monks in mind, is a classic shape that has been continuously produced by Nankei Pottery for over 50 years. Its dignified appearance has been beloved for a long time.

When guests arrive, it can serve 2 to 4 people with small Sencha bowls.

There are two types of tea strainers available: a bottom net type with a stainless steel mesh, and a traditional shared tea strainer. Please choose according to your preference.

Material

The clay used is rich in iron, a mixture that has been used for teapots for a long time. It is fired without glaze, allowing the iron content to turn black. Especially the unglazed interior, with its fine irregularities, gently moderates the astringency of the tea, making it smooth and deliciously transformed.

Manufacturing Process

After firing, the teapot undergoes a process called "fitting" to ensure the lid and body fit tightly together. This involves applying a "fitting powder" between the lid and body and rotating them against each other to "fit" them. This increases the closeness of the fit between the lid and body, a method that has always been used in the production process of authentic teapots.

Kuroneri (Black)

In "Kuroneri," during the fitting process, the carbonized (tanka) black surface is worn away, revealing the red clay inside at the fitted parts.

Regular Maintenance

Normally, just rinse with water and make sure it is well dried after washing. If tea stains or limescale become a concern, you can also soak and wash it in a diluted dishwashing bleach.

Instruction for Use

  • Pouring too quickly at a steep angle may cause water to spill from around the lid. Start pouring at a gentle angle and slowly tilt further.

For Shared Tea Strainer Kyusu

  • The tea strainer part is very thin and may be damaged if it hits other dishes or is pressed hard. Washing in a dishwasher may cause damage depending on the usage conditions. Hand washing is recommended. Quickly rinse out tea leaves with water or hot water, drain well, and dry. Occasionally drying in sunlight makes it more hygienic. If tea stains are a concern, soaking overnight in diluted oxygen-based bleach for dishware makes it clean. Rinse thoroughly to ensure no smell remains and dry well.

About Stoneware

  • Use a neutral detergent for washing. Do not use a sponge with an abrasive, metal scrubbers, or cleanser as they may scratch the surface. The original material includes iron powder in the clay, and black spots may appear on the surface, which are part of the product's texture. As the product leaves the natural texture of the soil exposed, oil stains may easily adhere, but they can be cleaned with detergent and a scrubber. Washing in a dishwasher may cause damage depending on the usage conditions. Hand washing is recommended.
