FAQ
About Our Products
What kind of products do you offer? Are they authentic Japanese crafts?
We curate an exquisite collection of authentic traditional Japanese crafts. Each piece is handcrafted by skilled artisans in Japan, often using techniques passed down for generations, sometimes centuries. We partner directly with small workshops and individual artists across Japan, ensuring the authenticity and quality of every item. Our mission is to preserve these crafts and share their beauty and stories with the world.
What techniques are used to make the products?
Our products are created using diverse traditional Japanese craft techniques. For example, lacquerware items like the 'Hazy Moon' showcase the smooth shapes achieved through wheel-throwing ('Rokuro') by artisans skilled in Yamanaka lacquerware from Ishikawa Prefecture. The Bamboo Sake Set blends Kyoto's bamboo crafting expertise with the 'Maki-e' technique, where delicate patterns are drawn using gold powder. Woodwork pieces such as the 'Kumiko Lantern' feature the intricate 'Kumiko' method of assembling wood without nails. These represent highly specialized techniques unique to each field, often mastered over many years and passed down through generations.
Who makes these products?
Our items are individually crafted by skilled artisans and dedicated workshops across Japan who are committed to preserving traditional practices. We believe in valuing not only the exceptional skill of the makers but also the stories and passion embedded in their work. On individual product pages and our blog, we introduce these creators, sharing insights into their backgrounds, the history of their workshops, and their dedication to the crafting process. We hope that engaging with these narratives deepens your understanding and connection to the pieces you acquire. We find that customers often seek more than just an object; they connect with the stories and values behind a creation. This engagement fosters an appreciation for true value beyond mere price competition and, we believe, helps ensure the future of these precious traditional arts.
Are the items handmade?
Yes, every piece in our collection is individually handcrafted by master artisans. Due to the handmade nature, slight variations in color, shape, size, or texture may occur. These subtle differences are not flaws but rather inherent characteristics of handmade items, making each piece unique. We believe this adds to the charm and value of the craft.
What materials are used? Are they sustainable?
Our products are crafted using traditional, often natural and eco-friendly materials such as specific regional clays for pottery, natural wood, urushi lacquer, high-quality textiles (like silk or hemp), and washi paper. Many traditional crafts inherently utilize sustainable practices, focusing on natural, renewable resources and creating durable items meant for long-term use. We partner with artisans who employ ethical and sustainable methods, from responsible sourcing to minimizing waste.
How should I care for these items?
Care instructions vary depending on the material and craft. Many items are intended for daily use, but some require specific care (e.g., not suitable for dishwashers or microwaves). Please refer to the 'Instructions for Use' section or “Important Notices” section on each product page for detailed guidance. Proper care reflects the Japanese ethos of valuing and prolonging the life of cherished objects.
Will out-of-stock items be available again?
Some items may return, but due to the handmade, small-batch nature of our products, availability can be limited and restocking times may vary (sometimes up to a month or more). If an item you desire is out of stock, we recommend contacting us or expressing your interest so we can notify you if it becomes available again.

How much does shipping cost?
Shipping costs are based on your total order value. Orders totaling USD 400 or more (or the equivalent in your local currency) qualify for FREE shipping. For orders under USD 400, a flat rate shipping fee applies based on the destination country:
- United States: USD 10
- Canada: CAD 15
- United Kingdom: GBP 10
- European Union: Calculated at checkout (equivalent in USD 10)
- Australia: AUD 15
Multiple items within the same order will ship together for the applicable flat rate (or for free if the order qualifies), with no additional per-item charges. The final shipping cost will be calculated and displayed during the checkout process before you complete your payment.
How long will it take to receive my order?
- Orders are typically processed within 5 business days (excluding weekends and holidays), though this is not guaranteed and may take longer for back-ordered or pre-ordered items. Once shipped from Japan, estimated delivery times are:
- EMS, FedEx, DHL, UPS: Usually 3-7 business days for international shipping.
Please note these are estimates only. Actual delivery times can vary due to factors like customs processing, carrier delays, weather, and local postal service efficiency in the destination country.
How can I track my order?
Once your order has shipped, you will receive a shipping confirmation email containing a tracking number. You can use this number to check the status of your shipment on the carrier's website. Please allow up to 48 hours for the tracking information to become active after receiving the email.
How are fragile items packaged for international shipping?
We understand the value and fragility of traditional Japanese crafts. We take great care in packaging items securely for international transit. This includes using protective materials like bubble wrap, ensuring items are well-cushioned and fixed within the box, sometimes using double-boxing, and labeling packages appropriately. Our goal is to ensure your items arrive safely.
Customs, Duties & Taxes
Are customs duties, import taxes (VAT/GST), and fees included in the price?
No, the prices displayed on our website and the shipping costs do not include import duties, taxes (like VAT or GST), or customs handling fees. We understand that customs charges can be a concern; please rest assured that when you shop at Millennium Gallery Japan, you are receiving genuine, uniquely crafted Japanese products of the highest quality—objects truly worth any additional fees. To help you enjoy a worry‑free shopping experience, please refer to our Shipping Policy.
Will I have to pay customs duties or import taxes? Who is responsible?
As the importer, you (the customer) are responsible for paying any applicable customs duties, import taxes (VAT, GST, etc.), and carrier handling fees levied by your country's customs authorities upon arrival. These charges are separate from your payment to Millennium Gallery Japan.
How are duties and taxes calculated? Are there tax-free limits?
Duties and taxes are determined by your local customs office based on the type of goods, the value declared, and the origin of the goods. Many countries have a "de minimis" threshold, below which duties and taxes may be waived. For the tax exemption thresholds specific to each country, please refer to the Shipping Policy.
How do I pay for customs duties and taxes?
Typically, the shipping carrier (e.g., FedEx, DHL, EMS/local post office) will contact you once the package arrives in your country to arrange payment of any duties, taxes, and fees. Payment is usually required before the package can be delivered to you. Failure to pay these charges may result in the package being returned to us (at your expense), held, or potentially confiscated by customs.
