BUNACO: The Japanese Art of Turning 'Useless' Wood into Light

Once considered difficult to process due to its high moisture content and even called a "useless tree," was the beechwood of Aomori Prefecture. To utilize this abundant resource, an innovative woodworking technique called "BUNACO" was invented in 1956. It is a unique manufacturing method where beechwood is processed into thin tape-like strips, which are then coiled to create a shape. This technique overcame the warping problems specific to beech and made it possible to create beautiful curves with less material. The warm forms born from the artisans' handwork quietly tell a story of Japanese ingenuity and respect for nature.
