Whether you wish to deepen your yoga practice with the natural scent of rush grass or improve your sleep quality through natural humidity control, our Tatami collection serves as a bridge to a simpler, more mindful way of living.
Everything About Tatami: History, Science, and Craftsmanship
"Tatami" is the icon of Japanese interiors. It is a traditional craft that has supported the Japanese lifestyle and spirituality for centuries. Behind its simple appearance lies a deep history, the miraculous function of plants that synthetic materials cannot mimic, and advanced weaving techniques.
What is Tatami? Origins and History
The word "Tatami" comes from the verb tatamu (to fold). Originally, it referred to any mat that could be folded and stored. Today, it generally refers to a thick mat consisting of a straw core wrapped in a woven Igusa (rush grass) facing.
Its history has evolved alongside Japanese culture:
- Ancient Times (700s): The oldest existing Tatami dates back to the Nara period, found in the Shosoin Treasury. It was a luxury sleeping platform for Emperors.
- Heian Period (794-1185): Used as movable seating for aristocrats. The thickness and the pattern of the hem (Heri) indicated one's rank.
- Muromachi Period (1336-1573): The style of covering the entire floor with Tatami (Shoin-zukuri) began. This is the origin of the modern Japanese "Washitsu" room.
- Edo Period (1603-1868): Tatami became accessible to commoners. It became such vital infrastructure that the role of "Tatami Magistrate" was created to manage the castle's mats.
Modern Era: Today, Tatami is transcending Western and Eastern styles, gaining global attention as a symbol of "Eco-Luxury" and "Mindfulness."
The Natural Air Purifying Power of "Igusa"
The Igusa plant used for the surface of Tatami acts as a natural air purifier. If you look at a cross-section of an Igusa stem under a microscope, you will see a structure resembling a honeycomb sponge called the "Lamp Wick" (Toshin).
This unique structure gives Igusa three distinct effects:
- Superior Humidity Control: Igusa has an absorption capacity approximately 2.5 times that of cotton. In humid summers, it absorbs moisture to keep the surface cool; in dry winters, it releases stored moisture. A standard Tatami mat (1.62㎡) breathes about 1.8 liters of water, naturally regulating the indoor climate.
- Air Purification: The sponge-like structure traps airborne particles. Studies show Igusa can reduce nitrogen dioxide by up to 98% and formaldehyde (a cause of sick building syndrome) by 78%. It actively filters the air, creating a safe environment for children and allergy sufferers.
- Powerful Deodorization: Igusa neutralizes odors rather than masking them. It reduces chemical components of bad smells—such as ammonia, sweat, and foot odor—by nearly 98%, keeping your living space smelling fresh without chemicals.
- The Scent of Relaxation: The grassy aroma of Tatami contains Phytoncide (the refreshing scent of forests) and Vanillin (the calming scent of vanilla). These components have been scientifically proven to lower heart rates and promote relaxation similar to Shinrin-yoku (Forest Bathing).
Sustainability and the Tatami Cycle
In a world fighting plastic pollution, choosing Tatami is an ethical choice. However, the number of Igusa farmers has plummeted from 1,200 to just 300 in twenty years. We are fighting to save this tradition through "Connected Manufacturing," where our employees work alongside farmers in the fields.
The 1-Year Journey of Your Mat:
- Winter Planting: Planted in the freezing December water paddies of Japan. The harsh winter creates dense, tough fibers.
- Summer Harvest & Mud Dyeing: Harvested in summer and dipped in natural clay (Sendan). This "Mud Dyeing" protects chlorophyll, locking in the green color and creating the distinct aroma.
- Weaving: Woven by local artisans, supporting the regional economy.
- Use: Functions as a zero-electricity air purifier and humidifier for years.
- Disposal: Fully biodegradable. It returns to the earth without leaving microplastics.
Eco-Innovation:
- Recycled Materials: We use recycled non-woven fabric for cushioning, repurposing packaging films to reduce waste.
- Hiba Essence: We coat our products with natural oil from the Aomori Hiba tree, providing chemical-free antibacterial and deodorizing power safe for pets and babies.
The Artisan's Soul: "Connected Manufacturing"
In a world of mass production, our Tatami mats stand apart. They are the result of "Connected Manufacturing" by IKEHIKO (Est. 1886). We grow our own grass and weave it in our own factories, ensuring quality from soil to finish. Each sheet of Igusa is woven by a specialized craftsman.
Meet the masters whose philosophies are woven into every fiber:
- Teruo Yoshitake: A master of the traditional Kakegawa weave, Yoshitake finds his joy in the off-season, experimenting with complex new patterns. His philosophy is simple: "Careful work." His dedication ensures a uniform, smooth texture that feels gentle against the skin.
- Toshiyuki Noguchi: Noguchi operates on a philosophy of absolute integrity. "We ship many mats, but the customer receives only one," he explains. He inspects every piece with the mindset that cutting corners is a betrayal of that customer's trust. His motivation is simply hearing you say, "I'm glad I bought this."
- Ichiro Kabashima: With over 50 years of experience, Kabashima treats his looms as living partners. "To check the machine, you need all five senses," he says. He listens to the rhythm and even smells the oil to ensure the loom is happy, treating it with the same care one would a human being.

Deepening Your Lifestyle: The Stage for "Zen" and "Relaxation"
A Tatami mat is a platform that switches your mind from "busy" to "calm."
The Moment of Silence: A Foundation for Mindfulness
For those seeking mental clarity, Tatami provides the physical grounding needed for a home Zen space.
- Stability for Zazen: Unlike soft rugs, the firm cushion and texture of Tatami support the body perfectly for meditation.
- Deepening Focus: Pair with a Zafu (Meditation Cushion). The Tatami accepts your weight, while the Zafu aligns your spine, enabling deep breathing. Lighting Japanese Incense completes the ritual, using scent to trigger a meditative state.
The Moment of Ease: The Luxury of "Low Living"
Lowering your eye level calms the nervous system and creates a sense of spaciousness.
- Tea Ceremony at Home: Sitting on the floor to enjoy tea with Japanese tea ware becomes a special ritual. The organic texture of the rush grass resonates with the warmth of the pottery.
- Shadow & Light: At night, place a Washi Paper Lamp on the floor. The low light casts beautiful shadows across the weave of the Tatami, creating a quiet, sound-dampened atmosphere perfect for reading or stretching before bed.
Care Instructions
Tatami is durable but natural. Treat it with care, and it will age gracefully.
- Before First Use: Wipe gently with a dry cloth to remove the "Mud Dyeing" powder (essential for protection). Never use a wet cloth.
- Routine: Vacuum slowly along the grain of the grass.
- Spills: Wipe immediately. The natural wax repels liquid briefly, but it will soak in if left.
- Sun: Direct sunlight accelerates yellowing. Avoid prolonged exposure if you wish to keep the green color longer.
FAQ
Q: Does it smell?
A: Yes, it has a distinct, therapeutic scent of fresh grass and forest. It will fade gradually over time.
Q: Is it pet-friendly?
A: Yes, it neutralizes pet odors naturally. However, we recommend trimming claws to prevent scratching the weave.
Q: Can I use it for babies?
A: Absolutely. It is a natural material with shock-absorbing properties and air-purifying capabilities, creating a clean environment for crawling.
Q: Why does the color look different in the center vs. the edges?
A: This is proof of authenticity. The root and tip of Igusa are white, while the middle is green. When woven, the edges show the white roots. This is a natural characteristic, not a defect.
