Also referred to as blue granite for its bluish tone with biotite, and known as the diamond of granite for its fine crystalline structure, Aji stone offers a hardness comparable to quartz and resistance to weathering. The region's stone industry spans over 400 years, tracing back to full-scale quarrying for Takamatsu Castle in 1588 and major technical advancements during the construction of Yashima Toshogu in 1814. Skilled local craftspeople execute every stage from extraction to finishing, applying refined techniques to shape this durable material.

About Aoishima

Founded by craftsman Chikara Ninomiya alongside local artisans and commercial support, Aoishima operates out of Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. Established to share the appeal of local Aji stone from Takamatsu, Mure, and Aji towns, the company is rooted in a deep commitment to sustaining the area's historic stone industry. In 2012, Ninomiya collaborated with thirteen local craftsmen and commerce group members to create the AJI PROJECT brand. Shifting Aji stone beyond its traditional uses in building materials and stone statues, Aoishima's artisans craft contemporary interior items and everyday objects designed for modern living environments, bridging local heritage with functional home design.

Everyday Functional Decor

The Japanese Aji Stone Doorstop "komame" brings the grounded character of natural stone into modern living spaces. Crafted from three rounded granite cylinders bound with natural hemp rope, it provides a quiet presence at an entrance to hold a door securely open. Beyond its practical role in daily transitions, the piece acts as a understated home decor sculpture or interior accent piece that highlights the raw texture and natural beauty of the stone. The hemp rope not only binds the stone elements together but also doubles as a practical handle and creates a soft buffer between the heavy granite and the floor, allowing it to rest naturally within various room settings.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/1400/4241/files/japanese-aji-stone-doorstop-komame-natural-stone-entryway-scene-2.jpg?v=1792216086
